What to Do Before Dropping Off Your Car for Body Work

Ray's Automotive • April 20, 2026

Before you drop your car off for repairs, there are a few simple things you can do to make the process easier.

Most of these steps are quick, but they help avoid delays and make sure nothing gets in the way while your vehicle is being worked on.

Why a full tank of gas matters for calibration

This is something most people don’t expect, but it’s important—especially on newer vehicles.

Fuel affects the weight of the car, and that matters when we’re calibrating sensors. Manufacturers design these systems to be calibrated under specific conditions, including fuel level.

  • A full tank helps ensure proper calibration
  • Weight distribution affects sensor accuracy
  • It prevents delays during the repair process

If the tank is low, we may have to fill it before continuing.

What to remove from your vehicle before service

Before dropping your car off, it’s best to remove everything from it. Even items that seem unrelated can get in the way.

We may need access to the trunk or other areas depending on the repair.

  • Remove personal belongings and valuables
  • Clear out the trunk and interior
  • Take garage openers, cash, and important items

This keeps your belongings safe and avoids any confusion.

Preparing newer vehicles with cameras and sensors

If your vehicle has cameras or security systems, it’s a good idea to disable them before bringing it in.

These systems can interfere with the repair process or raise privacy concerns if they’re left active.

  • Turn off cameras or monitoring systems
  • Use valet mode if available
  • Prevent alerts during the repair

It helps everything run smoothly while your vehicle is in the shop.

What happens during the intake process

When you arrive, we don’t just take your keys and move on. We walk through the situation with you so we understand what you need.

We’ll inspect the vehicle, document the damage, and explain what the next steps look like. That way, you’re not left guessing about what’s happening.

From there, we build a repair plan based on your vehicle and your situation.

  • Do I really need to remove everything from my car?

Yes. It’s the best way to avoid lost items and allows technicians to access any part of the vehicle if needed.

  • What happens if I forget something in the car?

We’ll do our best to keep everything safe, but it’s always better to remove important or valuable items ahead of time.

  • Do I need to do anything special before dropping off a newer vehicle?

If your car has cameras or security features, disabling them or using valet mode helps avoid issues during the repair process.
